Journeying to the water’s edge and beyond.
The concept for our project began organically.
Chris and I met while I was on assignment for National Geographic, writing a story about great white sharks. Chris was working as a dive supervisor and shark wrangler for Rodney Fox Great White Shark Expeditions.
When we met, I was a seasoned traveler and storyteller. Chris was an experienced diver, with the knowledge and network that comes with that. He preferred being underwater and still does—I believe he should have been born with gills. And although I have always been an ocean lover and water baby (avid swimmer and snorkeler), I was not a scuba diver (yet).
As we shared our love for our respective worlds with each other—the terrestrial and underwater—we quickly realized how much we were missing out on. And that inspired us to embark on this journey—to get divers traveling and travelers diving.
We traveled to 50 locations in 35 countries over 14 continuous months, spending more than 250 hours underwater to bring you this book. Chris is our “designated diver”—he knows what to look for and what questions to ask. I bring the traveling and storytelling experience. Also, as a new-ish diver, I have advice and suggestions for new or less-experienced divers. Together, we’ve created a book that is the best of both worlds, and the start of much more to come.
We hope you’ll join us on our journey. No one has it all figured out yet, including us, but we love learning and exploring, and sharing what we’ve discovered with you.
